What Dufflewool Is
Wool holds its loft when damp, where down flattens and stops insulating. Wool Fill Compared With Down and Synthetic Padding
Down has the better warmth-to-weight ratio in dry cold and loses most of it when wet. Synthetic wadding keeps working when damp but does not breathe, so it traps moisture against you and is made from oil. Wool sits between the two: it insulates while damp, moves moisture outward instead of holding it, and it is a renewable fibre that will break down at the end of the garment's life. In a British winter, which is wet more often than it is severe, that trade is the right way round.
How to Wear Dufflewool
Treat the liner jackets as mid-layers and the rest as outer layers. The Silas or Marilla goes under a duffle coat or an overcoat when it turns properly cold, and works alone in spring and autumn.
