The submariner jumper is the Royal Navy's roll neck, and the shape is entirely functional in origin: a high ribbed collar that can be pulled up over the chin, dense wool that keeps working when it is damp, and a close rib at cuff and hem to stop wind travelling up the sleeve. It became standard issue for British submarine and destroyer crews, and it has outlasted every fashion that borrowed it since.
Gloverall's version is knitted in England from 100% merino wool, in a regular fit with a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem. Merino gives it the warmth of a naval knit without the scratch of the original issue wool. Wear it over a shirt and under a duffle coat or overcoat, or on its own when the collar is doing the work of a scarf.
Hand wash only in cool water, dry flat, and pull it back into shape while it is still damp.
