Is a duffle coat warm enough for winter?

Yes. The Women's Original Monty is cut from a dense 90% wool cloth, and the generous fit leaves room for a heavy jumper underneath, so the warmth builds in layers.

Can you machine wash a duffle coat?

No. Wool duffle coats are dry clean only; do not machine wash or tumble dry.

What do you wear with a duffle coat?

Almost anything short of black tie. Over chunky knitwear and denim it is the classic weekend look; over tailoring it reads as characterful rather than formal. The toggles look as good open as fastened.

Which colour duffle coat is most versatile?

Navy is the classic and goes with everything; camel is the softer alternative. If it is your first duffle coat, choose navy.

Are the women's duffle coats made in England?

Yes, every women's duffle coat in the Heritage Collection is made in England, as are the men's Heritage duffle coats and the children's duffle coats.

What is a duffle coat?

A hooded wool coat fastened with toggles rather than buttons, named after Duffel in Belgium where the cloth was first woven and standardised by the Royal Navy. The women's duffles keep that pattern: deep hood, toggle fastening, dense cloth, cut for a woman's frame. The Original Monty and the Freda are where the range starts.

Are duffle coats still in fashion?

Gloverall has made them without a break since 1951, which is the more useful answer: the duffle moves between fashion's foreground and its background rather than in and out of existence. What changes is the length and the styling around it. A navy or camel Original Monty at mid length is the version that has looked current in every decade since the fifties.

What is the difference between the Monty and the Freda duffle coat?

The Monty is a plain wool coat in solid colours, with wooden toggles and jute rope. The Freda is a heavier double-faced cloth with a tartan lining, buffalo horn toggles and leather loops. The Freda also comes in two slim-fit versions, long and short. Our women's duffle coat guide compares every style side by side.

Women's Duffle Coats (Duffel), Made in England

Women's Duffle Coats

The women's duffle coat (or duffel coat) at Gloverall is not a scaled-down version of the men's, it's a collection built around the distinct silhouettes that women actually reach for. The choices range from the knee-length Original Monty Duffle Coat in boiled wool, to the tartan-lined Freda Duffle Coat in double-faced Melton and its slim-cut version, the Long Slim Fit Freda. Each is made in England, with the craftsmanship that has defined Gloverall since 1951.

The Women's Original Monty Duffle Coat

The Women's Original Monty is the closest to the coat's military roots, oversized and utilitarian, cut from boiled wool with a herringbone webbing interior, traditional pancake hood, and the brand's signature wooden toggles and jute rope fastenings. Available in eight colourways including Camel, Navy, Black, Charcoal and Rust, in sizes XS to 2XL. At £499, it's the coat that carries Gloverall's full heritage in one purchase.

The Freda Duffle Coat

The Freda is cut oversized in a double-faced Melton wool with a tartan lining, finished with buffalo horn toggles, leather loops, a detachable throat tab and a pancake hood. Named for the Gloverall founding family, it's a coat with genuine provenance. Available in nine woven tartan colourways, from Black Royal Stewart and Navy Dress Gordon to Silver Prince of Wales, in sizes 6 to 22.

The Slim Fit Freda, Short and Long

For a more tailored silhouette, the Short Slim Fit Freda brings the duffle coat closer to the body at upper-thigh length, with a shoulder cape that adds structure without bulk. The Long Slim Fit Freda keeps that close fit at knee length, a strong silhouette in tartan colourways like Navy Royal Stewart, Black Royal Stewart, and Camel Buchanan. Both are cut in the same double-faced Melton as the Freda; the Short Slim Fit comes in sizes 6 to 22 and the Long Slim Fit in sizes 6 to 20.

Choosing the Right Women's Duffle Coat

If you want authenticity without compromise, the Original Monty delivers the original silhouette in boiled wool, exactly as it was intended: generous, warm, and built to last decades. If you want tartan-lined Melton with horn toggles and the same generous fit, the Freda is the answer. For a more defined shape, the Slim Fit Freda in either length brings a tailored cut to heritage materials. Our women's duffle coat guide compares every style side by side. Pair any style with a Submariner Jumper underneath, or wear over tailoring using the Hepburn Overcoat as a benchmark for how to layer outerwear properly.
