Knitwear
Gloverall's knitwear collection follows the same principle as the outerwear: every piece is made from the right material, constructed to last, and designed with a clear reference point in British and maritime working dress. The collection's core is four wool pieces — the Submariner Jumper, the Aran Jumper, the Shawl Collar Cardigan and the Knitted Polo Shirt — each knitted from 100% merino wool and made in England or sourced in the UK. Together they form a complete layering wardrobe that works underneath, alongside, and independently of the brand's outerwear.
The Submariner Jumper
The Submariner Jumper is the anchor of the collection. It traces its design to the heavy wool jumpers issued to Royal Navy submariners during the Second World War — garments that needed to function in cold, cramped conditions below deck, where warmth was a matter of necessity rather than style. Gloverall's version is knitted in England from 100% chunky merino wool using a 3D knitting machine that produces a seamless construction — giving it both exceptional durability and a cleaner finish than traditionally seamed knitwear. A single ribbed collar, cuffs and hem keep the silhouette simple and versatile. Available in men's and women's cuts across Navy, Ecru, Burgundy, Mushroom and Grey, sizes XS to XXL. It's the piece that pairs directly with a Monty Duffle Coat on cold mornings, and does the job alone in October.
The Aran Jumper
The Aran Jumper is a more textured proposition. The original Aran knit comes from the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland, where fishermen's families developed intricate cable patterns — each stitch carrying a specific meaning, from the cable stitch representing fishing ropes and good fortune to the diamond stitch signifying wealth and success. Gloverall's version is knitted from 100% 5-gauge British merino wool, giving it the density and warmth of a traditional Aran without the coarser hand feel of unscoured wool. Ribbed cuffs and hem provide structure; the cable pattern reads as a classic. Available in an unusually wide palette — Navy, Ecru, Grey, Light Grey, Black, Burgundy, Burnt Orange and Army Green — making it one of the more versatile pieces in the range. Sizes XS to XXL.
The Shawl Collar Cardigan
The Shawl Collar Cardigan is made in England from 100% chunky-gauge merino wool and finished with branded horn buttons — a detail that connects it directly to the toggle hardware on Gloverall's duffle coats. It features two front patch pockets, a button-through fastening, and a raglan sleeve construction that makes it particularly comfortable as a layering piece under a coat. The shawl collar sits close to the neck without constricting it, providing warmth at the throat without requiring a scarf. The style gained its cultural associations in the 1950s through figures like Steve McQueen and Cary Grant, who wore it as a relaxed alternative to tailoring. Available in Navy, Ecru, Light Grey, Light Blue and Black, sizes XS to XXL.
The Knitted Polo Shirt
The Knitted Polo Shirt is the lightest-weight option in the range — knitted from fine merino wool rather than the chunky gauge used for the Submariner and Cardigan, which gives it a warmth-to-weight ratio suited to indoor wear and milder days. A traditional soft collar, three-button front fastening, and ribbed hem and cuffs keep the hallmarks of the classic polo in a version made to work year-round. Available in short and long sleeve, in Navy and Camel — the two colourways that anchor most of Gloverall's outerwear — so it layers under any coat in the range without colour coordination. Sizes XS to XXL.
Knitwear as a Layering System
Every piece in this collection was designed with Gloverall's outerwear in mind. The Submariner's generous, relaxed fit sits under the Original Monty or Hepburn Overcoat without bunching at the shoulders; the Cardigan's raglan sleeve construction makes it the most comfortable underlayer for longer coats. For those building a complete Gloverall wardrobe, the natural order is a knitted polo as a base, a Submariner or Aran as a midlayer, and a duffle coat, overcoat or peacoat over the top.
