Look for the size guide on the product page of the coat you are considering. It carries that garment's own finished measurements, and it is the most accurate way to choose your size.

It matters because our coats are not cut to one block. An Original Monty is made generously so it layers over knitwear; the Freda slim fits are cut close through the body. The same person can wear different sizes across the range and be correctly fitted in each of them.

How to measure yourself

You need a soft measuring tape and about two minutes. Measure over light clothing rather than over a jumper, and ask someone to help with the shoulder and sleeve if you can - those two are difficult to do accurately on yourself.

1. Chest. Around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level and your arms down by your sides.
2. Waist. Around your natural waist, at the narrowest point, without pulling the tape tight.
3. Shoulder. Across your back, from the bone at one shoulder point to the other.
4. Sleeve. From the shoulder point, along a slightly bent arm, to the wrist bone.
5. Back length. From the base of your neck straight down your back to where you want the coat to finish.

How to read our size guides

This is the part worth knowing, because the numbers are not body measurements.

Every figure in our size guides describes the coat, measured flat. Chest, waist and shoulder are taken straight across the garment from edge to edge, not around it. So a coat listed with a 55cm chest measures roughly 110cm all the way round. Sleeve and back length are measured along the garment.

To compare against yourself, halve your own chest measurement and look for a chest figure comfortably above that number. How much room you want above it is the ease built into the cut, which is why two coats in the same nominal size can read quite differently.

The quickest check of all is garment to garment. Take a coat you already own and like the fit of, lay it flat, measure it the same way, and compare the two sets of numbers. That removes the guesswork about ease entirely.

Size conversions

Our coats are made to UK sizing. These are body sizes, for finding your starting point when you shop in another market. They are a different thing from the garment measurements in each product's size guide, so use these to narrow down and those to confirm.

Men's coats

The Churchill Peacoat and the Morris Duffle Coat run to 4XL. Most other men's styles run XS to 2XL.

Women's coats

Women's styles use one of two size runs. The Freda Duffle Coat and both Freda slim fits are sized 6 to 22. The Original Monty, the Clementine Peacoat, the Chesterfield Overcoat and the Shelley Cropped Duffle Jacket are sized XS to 2XL. Each product's size guide shows the run that coat uses along with its own measurements, so compare against those rather than assuming an equivalence between the two runs.

How our coats are cut

Our fit descriptions tell you how much room is built into the coat. Each product page states the fit for that style under Design Details, next to the measurements.

Oversized. The Original Monty Duffle Coat in both the men's and women's ranges, the Mid-Length Monty, and the Women's Freda Duffle Coat. Cut with real room through the body so a heavy jumper fits underneath without pulling. Take your usual size for the silhouette the coat is designed to have. If you want it closer to the body and you layer lightly, size down.

Slim fit. The Freda Long Slim Fit and Freda Short Slim Fit Duffle Coats. Cut closer through the body and the sleeve than the rest of the duffle range. If you are between sizes, or you intend to wear a thick jumper underneath, take the larger size.

Our peacoats and overcoats sit between the two, with enough room for a mid-layer. Rather than generalise across the range, check the fit named on the product page and read it alongside that coat's measurements.

Every product page also shows the height of the model photographed in the coat and the size they are wearing, which is often the fastest way to picture the fit.

Children's sizes

Children's coats are sized by age in years rather than by height or by letter. The Original Duffle Coat runs from 2 to 16; the wool, corduroy and showerproof duffle coats run from 4 to 13.

Children grow through a coat quickly, and our children's duffle coats are cut with a little room for that. If your child is between two sizes, or the coat is being bought at the start of a season, take the larger one. Each children's product page carries its own measurements, so you can compare against a coat that already fits.

If you are between sizes

Take the larger size if you plan to wear the coat over knitwear, if you prefer a longer sleeve, or if you are buying a slim fit style. Take the smaller size if you want a closer silhouette on an oversized style and you layer lightly.

If you are still unsure, measuring a coat you already own will settle it faster than any general rule.

Do Gloverall coats run true to size?

Usually not. Our coats are already cut with room for a mid-layer, and the Original Monty is cut generously enough for heavy knitwear at your usual size. The exceptions are the Freda slim fit styles, which are cut closer through the body: if you intend to layer under those, take the larger size.

How do I measure my chest?
