Back to School Shopping: Choosing the Right Children's’ Coat

Back to School Shopping: Choosing the Right Children's’ Coat

It might still feel like summer — sandals by the door, suncream in the bag — but the school bell will be ringing again before you know it. And while there’s no need to rush the seasons, now is the perfect time to think ahead, especially when it comes to one of the most important pieces in your child’s autumn wardrobe: the coat.

Children grow quickly. That’s a given. And whether they’ve just hit a growth spurt or simply worn last year’s layers to the ground, a good coat — warm, well-fitting, and made to last — is worth its weight in gold.

The Classic Choice: The Duffle Coat

Enter the duffle coat. A British icon with European roots, and a perennial favourite for a reason. With its distinctive toggle fastenings, roomy hood, and timeless silhouette, the duffle has long been a go-to for keeping out the cold in style.

For children, it strikes the perfect balance: smart but not stuffy, playful but still polished. It’s the kind of coat that looks right in the schoolyard and still feels special on a weekend walk or family outing. In short: a coat they’ll actually want to wear.

The Fit: Just Right

When it comes to choosing the right size, it’s all about balance. You want a snug, secure fit that keeps the warmth in — but still enough room for layering a jumper or two underneath. Too big, and cold air will sneak in at the collar and cuffs. Too small, and you’ll be back shopping again before half-term.

At Gloverall, our children’s size guide runs from ages 2 to 16, but we always recommend a quick measure if you’re unsure. And while it might be tempting to size up “so they can grow into it,” oversized coats rarely sit well — they swamp small frames, lose their shape, and, crucially, don’t keep the cold out.

The Colour: Let Them Choose (Mostly)

Colour is where the personality comes in. A duffle coat is one of those rare styles that works across the spectrum — from rich, heritage reds and deep greens to classic navys, greys, and charcoals.

If the coat’s for everyday wear, let them have a say. A bright, cheerful tone adds a bit of fun to dark winter mornings — and makes them easier to spot at pick-up time. For more formal occasions, a neutral or darker shade always looks the part and pairs easily with school uniforms or dressier outfits.

How to Style It

When the temperature drops, a few thoughtful additions go a long way. A soft tartan scarf adds both warmth and contrast — a nod to the coat’s British heritage. A wool cap keeps things snug and stylish, and completes the look with quiet confidence.
