The origins of the submariner jumper
The submariner jumper has its design roots in the British Royal Navy. It was made to keep sailors warm in harsh, cold conditions at sea, and the heavy wool jumper became part of standard issue for the British military during the Second World War. Gloverall's submariner jumpers keep that ribbed detailing: ribbed cuffs and hem on all three styles, and a ribbed collar on the Men's Submariner Jumper.
The Gloverall range
Gloverall makes three submariner jumpers. The Men's Submariner Jumper, style MK5087, is knitted in 100% Merino wool, made in England, and cut to a regular fit, with a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem. It comes in eight colours: Black, Burgundy, Charcoal, Ecru, Green, Mushroom, Navy and Red, in sizes XS to 2XL.
The Women's Submariner Jumper, style LK6078, is also knitted in 100% Merino wool and made in England, with ribbed cuffs and hem. It is offered in six colours: Black, Ecru, Light Grey, Mushroom, Navy and Red, in sizes XS to 2XL. The Men's Breton Submariner Jumper, style MK5088, is made in England and cut to a regular fit, with ribbed cuffs, and comes in two striped colourways, Ecru/Navy and Navy/Ecru, in sizes XS to 2XL.
Materials and manufacture
The Men's Submariner Jumper and the Women's Submariner Jumper are both knitted in 100% Merino wool. All three jumpers in the range, including the Men's Breton Submariner Jumper, are made in England. What changes from style to style is the placement of the ribbing and the colours each style is offered in: a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem on the men's jumper, ribbed cuffs and hem on the women's jumper, and ribbed cuffs on the Breton.
Fit and sizing
The Men's Submariner Jumper and the Men's Breton Submariner Jumper are both cut to a regular fit. All three styles, including the Women's Submariner Jumper, run from size XS to size 2XL, so the size range is the same whichever style is chosen.
Comparing submariner jumpers
Shoppers comparing submariner jumpers across brands tend to look at the same few things: what the jumper is made from, where it is made, and how the collar, cuffs and hem are finished, since those are the parts that take the most wear. All three Gloverall submariner jumpers are made in England. The men's and the women's jumpers are knitted in 100% Merino wool. Each style is finished with ribbing at the cuffs and hem, and the Men's Submariner Jumper also has a ribbed collar.
Wearing a submariner jumper
The ribbing at the cuffs and hem, and at the collar on the men's jumper, holds the knit close at those openings. A submariner jumper can be worn on its own or under a coat or jacket in colder weather. The style began as knitwear for the British Royal Navy, made for warmth at sea.
Colours and colourways
The Men's Submariner Jumper is made in eight colours: Black, Burgundy, Charcoal, Ecru, Green, Mushroom, Navy and Red. The Women's Submariner Jumper is made in six: Black, Ecru, Light Grey, Mushroom, Navy and Red. Black, Ecru, Mushroom, Navy and Red are offered in both. Burgundy, Charcoal and Green are offered only in the men's jumper, and Light Grey only in the women's. The Men's Breton Submariner Jumper is striped, in two colourways, Ecru/Navy and Navy/Ecru.
