Both spellings are correct - "duffle coat" and "duffel coat" are accepted variants of the same garment. The word derives from Duffel, a town near Antwerp in Belgium, where the thick, heavy woven cloth used to make the coat was originally produced. Over time, both spellings entered common usage in English, with "duffle coat" being the more widely used spelling in British English, and "duffel coat" more commonly seen in American English.
The coat itself is defined by a set of distinctive design features: a hood, toggle fastenings (traditionally made from horn or wood and looped with rope), and a heavy, textured wool or wool-blend fabric. Originally worn by the British Royal Navy during the Second World War, it became a civilian wardrobe staple in the post-war decades and has remained a classic outerwear piece ever since.
At Gloverall, we have been making duffle coats for men, women and children in England since 1951 - longer than any other brand in the world. Our coats are crafted from premium Melton wool and remain true to the original design, with genuine horn toggles and rope loops, a deep hood, and that unmistakable silhouette. Whether you spell it duffle or duffel, ours is the original.
Both spellings are correct - "peacoat" and "pea coat" are widely accepted variants of the same garment, and you will find both used interchangeably in dictionaries, fashion writing, and everyday usage. "Pea coat" (two words) is the more traditional spelling, while "peacoat" (one word) has become increasingly common, particularly in American English and online retail contexts.
The origin of the name is debated. The most widely cited explanation is that it derives from the Dutch word "pij" (sometimes spelled "pije"), referring to a coarse wool cloth from which the coat was originally made. Another theory links it to the letter "P," used in naval terminology to denote a specific type of jacket.
What is less disputed is the coat's heritage: the pea coat has its roots in European naval dress, worn by sailors in the Dutch and later British Royal Navy from at least the early 18th century, prized for its warmth, durability, and ease of movement on deck. The defining characteristics of a pea coat are its double-breasted front with large lapels, broad nautical buttons, a short and sturdy silhouette, and a heavy wool or wool-blend fabric - all of which trace directly back to its seafaring origins.
Gloverall pea coats are crafted in the same spirit as our duffle coats: rooted in British outerwear heritage, made from premium Melton wool, and built to last. When you are looking for a pea coat that honours the original, you will find it here.
